Nors’ legacy through the eyes of our people

Nors Magazine is a magazine by all, for all.
This is our top premise: we want every edition to be collaborative, with the participation of everyone in the Nors universe. In this edition, which marks the Group’s 90th anniversary (a milestone that means so much to us), it makes particular sense that it should be so. So we have prepared a special challenge: throughout the year, we have been talking about our legacy of future. But what does this legacy mean for our people? That’s what we sought to find out!

Throughout the last 16 years, I have Auto Sueco Angola witnessed the legacy that Nors is building for the future. The Group has a solid commitment to innovation, constantly investing in technology and new solutions to meet the needs of its customers efficiently and affordably.

For me, “legacy of future” reflects the good examples, values, knowledge, and works left by those who’ve been here, so it can be continued by those who arrive.
When I first arrived here in 2004, Auto Sueco was growing incredibly. Everything that seemed big is now small, the space in the big Mulemba
starts to run out, and the once smaller teams grow exponentially and work at full speed. This growth opened the door to the launch of the new Ícolo
and Bengo workshops, unique installations, whose inauguration was a moment that significantly marked me because on that day, the “apple of the
golden eye”, the result of the commitment and work of great professionals, opened its doors to its clients and left a mark on the history of the Nors Group.

It is with immense pride and admiration that in my (still short) experience in the Group, I can witness and celebrate what the 90 years of existence have

For me, it is the record of what we have done and what we leave
for those who will follow us. I have worked at Auto Sueco Angola
for over 24 years. The first years of business were challenging:
the country was at war, we couldn’t move safely within a 60 km
radius of Luanda, and the economy had only recently opened
to free private enterprise. Without mobility and a market, how
could we trade? Thanks to Mr. Tomaz Jervell – of whom I have
fond memories as a great teacher and good counsellor – and his
team, who, with tenacity, determination, and hope for a better
tomorrow for Angola, knew how to keep the company going
in difficult times, and today Auto Sueco Angola is a company
of national renown and certainly the most extensive dealer in
heavy equipment.

It was only “yesterday” that I joined this great Group. No
matter how many years go by, I feel like it was yesterday.
I keep friends for life and stories to remember. One in
particular, in 2017, at the Pousada do Freixo, for the
employees tribute. Next to me at dinner were Dr. Tomás
Jervell and Mr. Tomaz Jervell, who, I have to confess, I didn’t
know was such a Portista. Knowing that we shared this
same passion while FC Porto was playing AS Monaco, Mr.
Tomaz, without anyone noticing, was signalling me with his
hand to give me the joy of knowing that our club was scoring
and who the scorer was. I will always remember him fondly.

A legacy of future was, is, and will be one of the main
characteristics of this magnificent company. The
importance left by those who came before us and what we
will leave as a legacy is unequivocal. In my case in particular,
I will never forget the 2016 edition of VISTA (Volvo
International Service Training Award), the 4th consecutive
edition with a presence in the semi-finals, passing in this
2016 edition to the world final, where we obtained 10th
place, a classification never achieved by any Portuguese
team. It’s a legacy I’m very proud of, and I make a point of
describing it to the younger generation.

To me, legacy is some achievement of expressive proportions that will
be reflected in the future. It will be remembered for a long time and, if
possible, be replicated. I had the opportunity in 2019 to contribute to many
improvements in the tax department, which I see as a legacy that I will leave
in the Group.

It was many years ago that we embraced this project, this company and many professionals who were and are part of it. It is a Group that fills us with pride and we should celebrate with those who made all the joys and achievements possible. In this special edition in which we celebrate 90 years of Nors’ history, I share a part of my story in this that is my second home! For those who don’t know me, I’m Sofia Maia, I work in shared services in the area of projects and continuous improvement, which is the most recent challenge I accepted within the Group, where I’ve been for 4 years. However, my story in this company begins in 2009, in the shared services centre in Porto, in the Accounting area, being only my second professional experience and where I faced some challenges, but also met some spectacular people who helped me grow as a professional. In 2012, I embraced the expansion project of our shared services and left for Brazil in a 3-year adventure, where I had the opportunity to get to know a new culture, and where I learned to overcome many challenges that a new geography and implementation from scratch always bring. Something that helped me a lot to overcome these challenges was the way I was received by the local teams, where I made friendships that still last today. After a break of 2 years, and as they say a good son to the house returns, at the end of 2016, I was invited back, this time to the Tax team in the Angolan market, but based in Porto. Also in the family field, Grupo Nors has a very important weight in my history, since it was here that I met my husband and after all these years here I am, after two children, always in search of new internal challenges that add value to the company and can somehow continue this legacy!

I’ve started my career at Nors 4 years ago as a Marketing Manager for the companies in Angola and Southern Africa. For me, it has been quite challenging and a rewarding experience to work in the Marketing and Communication areas of different business areas in African territory. Due to its different nature and forms of implementation in the market, each action or each marketing initiative personally translates into a new learning experience that allows me to take inputs and apply them in new market contexts, but also to enrich myself with new experiences. As a curiosity, it was also through this function that I had the opportunity to set foot on African soil and get to know new realities that mark us. A “legacy of the future” is a path to follow, with respect for its history, and with a lot still to do. As the saying goes: better than the destination is the journey. And new journeys towards successful destinations will undoubtedly mark this legacy. Congratulations Nors!

We faced several challenges, but with everyone’s unity we managed to overcome them. Today I feel proud knowing that I was directly and indirectly part of some of Auto Sueco Angola’s best years between 2006 and 2012 when we imported several units and were awarded by our supplier and partner, which still has an impact today. There is no better future without a present with a lot of determination. Today, the Group, with other dimensions, projects new challenges, but without forgetting its standard: giving opportunity to new talents, with experience and without experience in the market. And so our journey goes on, without limits.
